We haven’t posted much lately because we’ve been crazy busy putting the finishing touches on our updated website, portfolio and blog. While running through some bio images, I came across this silly photo of John and it made me laugh out loud. I thought it was a perfect antidote to the studio stress I’ve been feeling the last few weeks. Enjoy it now, since John will likely make me take it down once he sees it here.

Jennifer’s dress and flowers were clean-lined without being stark or spare. Her bouquet was a simple construction of lillies, gathered with plain satin ribbon. The flowing ends of her halter-style gown ties gave just a hint of a train. At the last minute, she decided to tuck two simple orchids into her loose updo, which I think was the perfect touch. The groom wore a yummy blue chalk striped suit. I think his suit /tie combo said “stylish” as much as it said “getting married”.

Shortly after arriving, the guests gathered in a lower meadow for a short ceremony. Since nature’s decor is pretty darn spectacular, the only set up required for the ceremony was about 50 white resin chairs for the guests. As the sun was setting, the wedding party and guests strolled up to the larger medow for wine under the trees, followed by a wonderful family style meal beside the lake. The caterer set up the meal on one long table, making the evening friendly and conversational.

Both of the professional organizations we belong to conduct quarterly contests. Sometimes we enter, sometimes we don’t. It can be a challenge to look back on the season as ask yourself: “What images are our best?” and also “What images will win a contest?”  Sometimes those are two completely different things. When we pick our contest entries, we can feel cynical about what kinds of photos seem to always win. But this time, as we compiled our choices, we tried to evaluate them based on both of these criteria. So here’s our choices for a recent contest. Let’s see how we do.

It’s no secret that the local scene of wedding photographers is a friendly and helpful one. Several Portland photogs, like us, belong to local chapters of professional organizations such as WPJA or ISPWP. Others of us just get together regularly to shoot the breeze or have a brew or two. It is these  friendly connections that made this terrific joint project possible. 23 independant photographers have all agreed to contribute to this collective blog so that Portland area brides and grooms would have an easier way of learning about several local photographers at once. Each studio will post one image per week is representative of our style. Besides being a convenient way of seeing the work of several studios in one place, you can feel confidant that all the photographers there are of the finest caliber and have the full support of their colleages. It’s so great when worlds collide and the circles in life overlap. One of the best things about photographing Ann and Brad’s beautiful wedding was that Ann is a friend of mine and we used to work at the same company. It was a delightful surprise to hear from her that we’d be the ones who would get to photograph her wedding to Brad in the late fall at The Viewpoint Inn.

Besides being an overall cool person, Ann is a talented designer. As is Brad. I assumed, rightly, that their wedding would be a gorgeous event. But what I hadn’t figured in advance, was that somehow Ann and Brad had managed to get the trees, the flowers and even the skies to coordinate themselves into this beautiful celebration.

Thanks, Ann and Brad for having us along on your day. John and I are crazy about the images. As I’m sitting at my computer, the palette is so lovely I want to lick the screen.

Best wedding dogs ever! Angela and Jeremy had their two little Boston terriers as wedding attendants (although I don’t think they got to attend the reception.) ohmygosh, they were adorable. Small, too. I was considering putting one in my camera bag, but then thought better of that idea.

Jeremy and Angela are from Colorado, but apparently Timberline figured large in their developing relationship. The lodge was one of their first trips together and they celebrated this fact by making Timberline Lodge the spot for their destination wedding. The day was especially pretty, warm and summery with the kind of golden light that only happens in September. Won’t it be great that Angela and Jeremy can return here years in the future and look back on a perfect day?

I can’t recall any wedding that was more fun to shoot, or one where I was happier with the images than Jennifer and Andy’s. The whole day was epic and amazing and a blast to photograph. In many ways, it was like a good movie.  Great backdrops and plot twists, a lovely leading lady and a devilishly handsome groom, plus interesting characters, and….. you guessed it: unexpected rain!

We were super psyched when we heard that Jennifer and Andy were hoping for some “Annie Leibovitz” style portraits at Hotel Monaco. I’m sure that Annie gets a little more than 15 minutes, though. My favs, however are the individual portraits of Jennifer and Andy. And you can’t see it here, but in the gallery (up in a couple weeks) you can see how that blue painting makes an incredible background for some of the portraits. It was a whole lot of fun– and lots different than our usual portrait technique.

The wedding was luscious and cozy. It was pouring at this point, so it felt wonderful to be warm and dry inside. I hadn’t been to this church before, but I was groovin’ on how the red carpet and rich wood tones would blend with the red walls from our portrait session.

And finally, the most delightful part of the day was Jennifer and Andy taking a little stroll before they headed into their reception. A few raindrops fell, but nothing too terrible. (Is there a better prop than a black umbrella?) They looked so happy and the light was doing all our favorite things. Yummy.
