I don’t know anyone who isn’t partly uncomfortable being photographed. Almost everyone is. To some degree it takes a willingness to suspend your self-judgement and to relax and have fun with the photographer. I feel like we got to that point with Ali and Michael on Sunday. At least, it looked to me like they were having fun–and I know that we did. Here’s a few of my favorite pics.
John and I have spirited debates about what makes a good portrait. For him, it’s energy and emotion. Many times he’s really fond of a crinkley smile or a vulnerable expression. For me–it has to be all that PLUS I get so picky about everything else in the frame. You know, are the leaves the right green, is the collar exactly right? We can drive ourselves crazy editing. But for us both, the best portrait is when the subject(s) feels good, looks good, the light is pretty and the energy is memorable. Now THAT is what makes a good portrait for us both. Ali, Mike, our time together certainly fills all that criteria in our opinion.
Ali and Mike: hope this is better than what the taxi driver could do for you. Congrats to you both–looking forward to 2008.
