About our blog

People say to me all the time: “You're so lucky. You get to go to weddings all the time." They're right. We are lucky. We get to be among people having a great time, looking and feeling their best and participating in what is often the most important day in someone's life.

Here’s the other thing we are lucky to see: the terrific style and creativity that our clients bring to their celebrations. If there is one thing we’ve learned while photographing weddings, it is that a wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be lovely. We dedicate our blog to sharing the terrific ideas that we’ve seen before and will see this coming season, with a focus on ideas that are simple, elegant and stylish.

All these images are the work of us or our associate photographers from events we've photographed. So, we say "thank you" to our clients who have shared their warmth and happiness with us.

About John & Theresa Valls

Because we love to travel, we photographed our first wedding together in exchange for two plane tickets to Europe. That was our original plan: we'd photograph a wedding or two, basically just enough to underwrite our love of italian food eaten in Italy. What we hadn't counted on, however, was how much we would grow to love everything about shooting and working together.

John's wedding photography is influenced by his advertising work with agencies, companies and magazines he shoots for. Avoiding an overly-produced style for his photos, John's images reflect his light touch as well as his ability to capture what is descriptive, yet beautiful.

My background in design management helps us create wedding albums that are both contemporary and timeless. I'm an avid believer in the strength of a killer edit, so I work with our clients to compile a photo selection that will meaningful and satisfying 25 years in the future.

Sneak peek: Amy & Jon, September 6th, 2008

Amy is the most easygoing bride I have ever met. And that’s amazing, given that this couple and their wedding planner pulled this gorgeous wedding together in only about 8 weeks. She and her husband Jon are the sweetest, mellowest, kindest couple. Everything was beautiful and relaxed at the setting, which was Jon’s family home. They...

UPDATED: Suzette and Scott, Aug 23, 2008

Imagine if Portland’s largest outdoor festival was being held on the front porch of your wedding venue? Suzette explained that we should probably rethink heading to the Waterfront for photos after the ceremony since 25 GAZILLION PEOPLE would already be there for the Luis Palau celebration. But we needn’t have worried, since everything went off...

UPDATED: Jennifer & Andy, August 31, 2008

I can’t recall any wedding that was more fun to shoot, or one where I was happier with the images than Jennifer and Andy’s. The whole day was epic and amazing and a blast to photograph. In many ways, it was like a good movie.  Great backdrops and plot twists, a lovely leading lady and a devilishly...

“Snow on the mountain…”

…Used to be a discrete phrase that one woman would say to another when she didn’t apply her lipstick completely. Since no one says that anymore, I think we should now repurpose that phrase to describe what happens to wedding party men after numerous hugs from wedding party women. B-maid’s and bride’s stick-based antiperspirants/deodorants  (which, of course,...

Vendor shout out: Kurt Winner

We met Kurt Winner a few Saturdays ago when he officiated Allison and Josh’s wedding at The Viewpoint Inn. I liked him instantly. He had a crisp, but low-key demeanor that put me in a good mood right away. He seemed to me to be stylish and contemporary, not stiff or stuffy. I thought you might enjoy...

Updated: Lauren & Blair, Sunday Aug 17, 2008

We had so much fun with Lauren and Blair! Laughing, smiling all day long. Lauren’s mom is the sweetest woman on the planet. And Blair is the kind of guy that a girl can really count on: solid, steady, strong, & sweet.
The day felt epic–showers and sunshine in the morning, then secret whispers about a...

Vanity search, a nice review

I had some extra time while having my a.m. caffeine fix, so I googled myself on a whim. I’m pleased as punch to find this review on something called Insider Pages. Our early spring client, Anna, got married at Timberline earlier this year. She wrote:

Parent albums

We have a couple sets of parents from out of town this year. This post is to help them decide between options that parents might choose. Our packages include a credit of $450 for each parent book. Clients can choose a “standard” parent book like these, or use the credit towards any album they like.

UPDATED: Allison & Josh, August 9th, 2008

I just rang Allison and Josh and they answered their cell from a ferry boat in Sausalito! After their perfect, perfect, perfect wedding at the Viewpoint Inn, they headed off on a driving honeymoon to the California Wine Country and San Francisco. Hey, maybe your proofs will even beat you home?
One of the nicest things...
