About our blog

People say to me all the time: “You're so lucky. You get to go to weddings all the time." They're right. We are lucky. We get to be among people having a great time, looking and feeling their best and participating in what is often the most important day in someone's life.

Here’s the other thing we are lucky to see: the terrific style and creativity that our clients bring to their celebrations. If there is one thing we’ve learned while photographing weddings, it is that a wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be lovely. We dedicate our blog to sharing the terrific ideas that we’ve seen before and will see this coming season, with a focus on ideas that are simple, elegant and stylish.

All these images are the work of us or our associate photographers from events we've photographed. So, we say "thank you" to our clients who have shared their warmth and happiness with us.

About John & Theresa Valls

Because we love to travel, we photographed our first wedding together in exchange for two plane tickets to Europe. That was our original plan: we'd photograph a wedding or two, basically just enough to underwrite our love of italian food eaten in Italy. What we hadn't counted on, however, was how much we would grow to love everything about shooting and working together.

John's wedding photography is influenced by his advertising work with agencies, companies and magazines he shoots for. Avoiding an overly-produced style for his photos, John's images reflect his light touch as well as his ability to capture what is descriptive, yet beautiful.

My background in design management helps us create wedding albums that are both contemporary and timeless. I'm an avid believer in the strength of a killer edit, so I work with our clients to compile a photo selection that will meaningful and satisfying 25 years in the future.

Guys + white on white = handsome

Wedding planning can be a bit girl-centric, wouldn’t you agree? It’s not uncommon for a gal to spend (literally) months figuring out what dress to wear, how she’ll do her hair, and of couse, the all-important shoe odyssey. But what of the guys? Seems like these days, the guy tends to go one of two...

Venue shout-out: Garden Vineyards

We were psyched to hear that we’d be shooting at Garden Vineyards. Because I had checked out their website, I knew it was going to be lovely, but it turned out to be even better than I had hoped.
Our site visit was on a warm July afternoon on a day the gardens were in full...

Sneak peek: Ali and Michael, Garden Vineyards

It can be a nervous Saturday morning decision…tent? no tent? tent? no tent? It’s enough to make a person chew their nails to the quick. But really, monsoons wouldn’t have dampened this couple’s spirits. (Good call on the tent, you guys!) The skies were pale grey, but the mood was light for the beautiful ceremony....

Sneak peak: Sarah and Jeff at Cannon Beach

It was sweltering in Portland, but breezy and refreshing at the beach when we arrived. What a perfect day. Sarah was having a blast getting ready with what seemed like about two dozen bridesmaids. (There were only 8, but by the sound of the laughter, you would have guessed more!) These girls have been awarded...

Color inspiration: pink

I’m still swooning from the decor at this wedding. It’s definitely the prettiest set up I’ve ever seen at the Oregon Golf Club. Here’s some of the details straight from Amanda’s mom, who oversaw the details of this lovely event.
First, they replaced the black rear wall pipe and drape with white drape and an overlay...

Bethany & Patrick, Saturday June 21, 2008, Broken Top

The truth about weddings is that something unexpected always happens. (I guess that makes it kind of expected, doesn’t it?) The surprise of this day was that after a perfect robin’s egg blue morning, the skies threatened just before the ceremony. So the decision is made to move everything indoors. The best part was, just...
