About our blog

People say to me all the time: “You're so lucky. You get to go to weddings all the time." They're right. We are lucky. We get to be among people having a great time, looking and feeling their best and participating in what is often the most important day in someone's life.

Here’s the other thing we are lucky to see: the terrific style and creativity that our clients bring to their celebrations. If there is one thing we’ve learned while photographing weddings, it is that a wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be lovely. We dedicate our blog to sharing the terrific ideas that we’ve seen before and will see this coming season, with a focus on ideas that are simple, elegant and stylish.

All these images are the work of us or our associate photographers from events we've photographed. So, we say "thank you" to our clients who have shared their warmth and happiness with us.

About John & Theresa Valls

Because we love to travel, we photographed our first wedding together in exchange for two plane tickets to Europe. That was our original plan: we'd photograph a wedding or two, basically just enough to underwrite our love of italian food eaten in Italy. What we hadn't counted on, however, was how much we would grow to love everything about shooting and working together.

John's wedding photography is influenced by his advertising work with agencies, companies and magazines he shoots for. Avoiding an overly-produced style for his photos, John's images reflect his light touch as well as his ability to capture what is descriptive, yet beautiful.

My background in design management helps us create wedding albums that are both contemporary and timeless. I'm an avid believer in the strength of a killer edit, so I work with our clients to compile a photo selection that will meaningful and satisfying 25 years in the future.

Editing: what we do

Editing is the silent hero of good wedding photography. Shooting gets all the glory, but after the event, it’s editing that makes or breaks a photographer.
We shoot somewhere around 2000 frames at each wedding we photograph. Each monday, we spend the entire day editing a single wedding that we shot the weekend before. Very carefully,...

Sneak peek: Amanda and Wayne, St Mary’s at Mount Angel

I admit I had the wrong impression of the Church at Mt Angel. As we were driving south towards Salem, I was expecting a rustic church in the country. John and I were both astounded at the sheer beauty of St Mary’s. If not for Amanda and Wayne, we would have never known about this...

Color inspiration: red

This time of year, I hear that many brides are planning fall or winter weddings. Thinking ahead to November or December, I can’t imagine anything more romantic than red as a color inspiration. Here’s some pics from a late fall/early winter wedding.  Besides the romance of it, there are other good reasons to choose red as...

Surprise!

I was bored last night so I googled John’s name just to see what came up. Surprise! I discovered that one of his images from 2007 won a WPJA award at the end of last year. And we never even knew it…. Here’s the photo and a link to the WJPA website.

Sneak peek: Melissa & Scott

It’s a first for us that our favorites from a wedding just happen to be black and white. (don’t worry, Scott and Melissa, there are scads of color images in your set.) Based on the huge thunder and lightning in the evening, I can’t believe how lucky we were to be treated to a rainless...

Color Trend: Apricot for Fall

Maybe you’re planning an autumn wedding. For me, there’s no better time of year than September or October in Portland. There’s that one morning in September when you first feel that crispness in the air. At once exhilarating and melancholy–it reminds me that our part of the world is moving away from the sun–but also...
