About our blog

People say to me all the time: “You're so lucky. You get to go to weddings all the time." They're right. We are lucky. We get to be among people having a great time, looking and feeling their best and participating in what is often the most important day in someone's life.

Here’s the other thing we are lucky to see: the terrific style and creativity that our clients bring to their celebrations. If there is one thing we’ve learned while photographing weddings, it is that a wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be lovely. We dedicate our blog to sharing the terrific ideas that we’ve seen before and will see this coming season, with a focus on ideas that are simple, elegant and stylish.

All these images are the work of us or our associate photographers from events we've photographed. So, we say "thank you" to our clients who have shared their warmth and happiness with us.

About John & Theresa Valls

Because we love to travel, we photographed our first wedding together in exchange for two plane tickets to Europe. That was our original plan: we'd photograph a wedding or two, basically just enough to underwrite our love of italian food eaten in Italy. What we hadn't counted on, however, was how much we would grow to love everything about shooting and working together.

John's wedding photography is influenced by his advertising work with agencies, companies and magazines he shoots for. Avoiding an overly-produced style for his photos, John's images reflect his light touch as well as his ability to capture what is descriptive, yet beautiful.

My background in design management helps us create wedding albums that are both contemporary and timeless. I'm an avid believer in the strength of a killer edit, so I work with our clients to compile a photo selection that will meaningful and satisfying 25 years in the future.

Vendor shout out: Joseph Vasquez/Joseph’s cakes

In my dreams, I wake up in the morning, go to the door in my fuzzy slippers and spy a little pink bakery box secretly left on my doorstep. And inside is a magical Joseph’s cake–magical because no matter how many slices you eat, there is always a full cake left to slice into. Oh,...

Vendor shout-out: Blum (with two little dots over the “u”)

We first saw Jordan Gladow’s work at the November Bravo Bridal Affair. She and her team (I assume there was a team, since it was a freakin’ incredible installation) had transformed one of the big ol bland ballrooms into a forest wonderland. I can’t remember all the details, but I remember moss, sticks, twigs, bark,...

Sneak peek: Nicole Lipman and Michael Ellis in Portland, OR

Well, it certainly does not get any better than this. Knockout bride, handsome groom, terrific families who came from all over the world. What an honor it was for us to photograph Nicole and Michael’s wedding at her family home in Portland, Oregon. It took more than an hour to pick which dozen photos to...

Sneak peek: Lindsey & Ken, Waverley Country Club UPDATED

This week we are working with the photos from Ken and Lindsey’s wedding at Waverley on Aug 18th. It was a perfect summer day, and whenever I think of Waverley I think of acres and acres of cool, cool green. Toward the end of the evening a summer storm blew in–I don’t think anyone but...

Ali & Michael’s engagement photos

I don’t know anyone who isn’t partly uncomfortable being photographed. Almost everyone is. To some degree it takes a willingness to suspend your self-judgement and to relax and have fun with the photographer. I feel like we got to that point with Ali and Michael on Sunday. At least, it looked to me like they...

Too many to choose: Amanda & Alec, Sauvie’s Island last Saturday

Now this is a problem: typically while I’m working on post production, I’ll grab  a fav shot or three and post here. But today–well, today is a dilemma. Do I post my absolute favorites? Or just my favorite favorites? Or, perhaps the 50 or 60 simply basic favorites? Alternatively, should I just post the incredibly...

that sounds good

DJs are the mixologists of party chemistry. When they’re good, a party bubbles along. A DJ can lift the tempo of a party (or kill it) all depending on how they do their thing. A couple nights ago, we were photographing a rehearsal dinner and the DJ’s blend really got my attention. The music was...

Sneak peak: Lisa and Zack at The Oregon Garden

Congratulations Zack and Lisa Peterson!
Lisa and Zack were one of the lucky couples who tied the knot on -07-07-07. By the looks of these pics, Lisa and Zack have the ability to make their own luck, since they were able to use their influence to make the day perfect and sunny.
